T-Mobile G1 still getting updates

// August 26th, 2009 // No Comments » // Google Android Phones

t-mobile-g1.t-manAs many have rumored, the T-Mobile Google Android G1 is not out of the race, that is the race for updates, T-Mobile has decided to let the T-Mobile Google Android G1 Phone recieve the future updates from Google, the updates soon to be release include, Donut (1.6) and Eclair (2.0), these updates give major changes to Android Phones as did Cupcake (1.5), so there is really no reason that the G1 should be left out of the loop.

But Thank You T-Mobile For Allowing Us To Keep Having Updates From You.

What is Android? A noobs guide to explaing your G1 to friends.

This is a question asked by many, whom almost never receive the desired answer. When this is next asked of you, which if you own a Google Android G1, it most likely will, here is some understanding of the system. It is hoped this will help Google Android users answer with something other than, “It is kind of like Linux”.

To begin with Android is a set of software subsystems which together give a fully functional system (software stack) to run on mobile devices. This stack consists of an operating system, middleware and key applications.

The architecture of Android consists of the following components: The Linux Kernel, Libraries, Android Runtime, Application Framework, and the Applications themselves.

The Linux Kernel: Android utilizes the Linux Kernel v.2.6 for system services. These include, but are not limited to security, memory management, process management, network stack, and driver model (such as your wifi, camera, audio, and display drivers). The Linux Kernel serves as an abstraction layer between the hardware and the software stack (that is, the Kernel works as an intermediary between the physical hardware and the software).

Android Runtime: The Java programming language has many core libraries (pieces of internal code which make Java possible), Android includes a set of core libraries that provides almost all of the functionality available in Java.

We must mention the Dalvik Virtual Machine (VM). Dalvik is a major piece of Android platform for mobile devices. The virtual machine runs Java platform applications which have been converted into a compact Dalvik Executable (.dex) format suitable for systems that are constrained in terms of memory and processor speed.

Each Google Android application runs its own process, with its own instance of the Dalvik Virtual Machine (VM). This nice thing about Dalvik is that it has been written to allow multiple VMs to run concurrently (that is many apps running at the same time).

The Dalvik VM relies on the Linux kernel for underlying functionality such as threading and low-level memory management.

Libraries: Thought the applications are written in Java, various components of Google Android use C/C++ libraries (pieces of code which make Google Android able to run). Some of these core libraries are: System C library, Media Libraries, Surface Manager, LibWebCore, SGL., 3D libraries, FreeType, and SQLite.

Application Framework: Applications need underlying code to be able to run, and thus underlying all applications is a set of services and systems. These include (i) a rich and extensible set of Views that can be used to build an application, including lists, grids, text boxes, buttons, and even an embeddable web browser, (ii) Content Providers that enable applications to access data from other applications, or to share their own data, (iii) A Resource Manager, providing access to non-code resources such as localized strings, graphics, and layout files (iv) A Notification Manager that enables all applications to display custom alerts in the status bar (v) An Activity Manager that manages the lifecycle of applications and provides a common navigation backstack.

Google Android Applications

Google Android Applications: Android comes with a set of core Java applications such as an email client, SMS program, calendar, maps, browser, contacts, and others. All Google Android applications are written in the Java Programming language, using the application framework already lain down by Google.

To end this, here is nice picture of the system architecture given by Google.

The Google Android question?

// August 6th, 2009 // No Comments » // Google Android Phones

android-renderedOne of the questions that’s on the minds of Android users everywhere. Is which device to choose? well that all depends on what you want to do with the device. The top devices running android right now would be the T-mobile Google Android G1, HTC  Hero, and T-Mobile Google Android My Touch 3g. Well for beginners if want a device that does a lot then one of the mentioned devices above will suit you very well. And if you want to go all out then you can go with T-mobile Google Android G1. Due to the ability to achieve root access on the device. And perform things like apps 2 SD and run Linux type commands and a sleuth of cool apps. but like i always said its really up to end user on what they want the device to do. So look out Apple. Google is around the corner ready to race and take the lead. Being all that said Android is the wave of the future. So get on board and enjoy the ride.

Undecided on Google Android ?

Undecided on Google Android ?

So what’s the hype with Google Android? So you’re still stuck on your Windows Mobile phone or your iPhone and you want to make a switch but you’re still not really sure? I remember the first time I touched an HTC Google Android G1 it just didn’t pay the phone any justice. This Google Android powered phone is a personal device and all-google-android-mini-2each person customizes the Android phone to them. So unless the phone is yours, you just won’t feel the full effect of this fairly new operating system for your mobile device.
Not to worry. There is a way for you to test run the Android operating system before you decide if you want to make the switch. Like a lot of Linux distribution, Google Android has a live version of the OS. If you’re not familiar with what a live version is I will explain. A lot of Linux distribution has the option of running an OS direct from a CD/DVD. Same goes for android.
Although Android is a mobile OS, it has a live CD version that you can run direct from your desktop or laptop. Cool huh? You can even run it from your virtual machine and give it the test ride it deserves. Although not a useful OS for a computer, the live PC version of this OS is a great way for you to play with the OS without having to dish out the cash just to see if you would like it or not. And for the tech geeks, do it just because you can. The very same reason why we run Linux Debian on our G1s. Because we can.
Here is the link for the live Android distribution. Enjoy and screen shot your giant G1.

Generation-G

// August 2nd, 2009 // No Comments » // Google Android Phones

Now that Generation X has come and gone, it is now time for generation G. Yes, you guessed it. I am talking about Generation Google.

Have you noticed the advancement that Google has made over the years? From simplicity in a powerful and revolutionary search engine, to Gmail, Street Views,  to yet another simple but genius idea….Google Voice. I have found myself using a lot of Google lately and can’t help but to think about how reliant my life has become of it.

I carry my G1 around of course as my phone but it also allowed me to fire my personal assistant. Just kidding, I did not have one but if I did, she would have been fired because the G1 runs my life for me. But the Android powered phone has given me freedom that I have never had before. I can run live time Twitter and manage all of my bank accounts at the same time detecting metal with my silly application.

On my netbook and my desktop computer, Google Talk and Google Desktop runs 24/7 so I can stay connected with friends and have searching power at the tip of my fingers and the applications move fast and takes up little resources. With Google Talk, I can skip using a mail client and streamline my netbook so that it moves quicker because those who have one know that we can hardly do anything if we run too many applications. Google has even teamed with some Laptop manufacturers powered by Ubuntu to create a user friendly and powerful socializing tool that is affordable for all. There are even talks of an Android powered personal computer in the near future.

Google Maps has been a life saver when I am looking for places to go. I simply put in the address and it has yet to fail to give me a street view of the area. Google Maps is great for seeing what you are getting into before you get there. It is great when you are looking for a place to live. Just plug in the address and bam, you can see your neighbor’s house and decide if you want to live next door to an escort service or not.

And how can I end this without talking about Google Voice? This is so simple yet so useful. Sign up now so you can get that invite. You can use the Google Voice number and never have to worry about porting a cell phone number again. Google assigns you a number and it forwards all calls to your chosen device(s). This is also great for small business owners. It opens the ability for starting businesses to have a phone number other than their personal phone but is received by their personal number. There are numerous usages for Google Voice depending on what your needs are and to be able to obtain a phone number separate from your own for free is unbeatable. Go Google!

I have never been so consolidated in my personal productivity and it is all thanks to Google’s advancement. Now why didn’t I buy that stock?
