Google Gmail Labs

Google Gmail Labs
Google GMail - copyrighted by GoogleGoogle has always been a great resource for information, but not as well know for its mail service Gmail, but now that the Gmail service is getting recognition, there are features that the Google Labs Team have added that makes Google Gmail service better than some of those other email services.
As most of the world knows, Google has introduced us with the T-Mobile G1, this phone is applied with a default Gmail account, but it seems that Google has extended Gmail to go on offline client computers, as well as a Gmail Application, but what also might come in handy when on the Gmail site are features like, in mail YouTube Preview (for all the YouTube videos we all know and love), in mail Picasa Preview (for all pictures that Picasa support), Sender Time Zone (this gives you the time zone of where the sender of that message lives), in chat (SMS) Text Messaging (this allows U.S. phones only to send text messages to a recipient)
Thats just the three great things about Google Gmail Labs, there are plenty more that you can choose from.
You can always look into this forum here at forums.all-google-android.com for more help and support of Google, Gmail and Google Labs

Gmail and Google

The word spreading around the web today from some high end techs about Googles new Webfinger. And Google is starting to get serious in this venture. Its a extension called “finger protocol” that was used back in the early day of the web to identify you by email address. Something similar to open id. What it does is to allow you to attach any info of your choosing to your email address. Hmm how useful that could be. So in essence it could allow you to have more information about you attached to your Gmail address for those you choose to let know. this is what in the works from the WebFinger Google Code page.
# public profile data
# pointer to identity provider (e.g. OpenID server)
# a public key
# other services used by that email address (e.g. Flickr, Picasa, Smugmug, Twitter, Facebook, and usernames for each)
# a URL to an avatar
# profile data (nickname, full name, etc)
# whether the email address is also a JID, or explicitly declare that it’s NOT an email, and ONLY a JID, or any combination to disambiguate all the addresses that look like something@somewhere.com
# or even a public declaration that the email address doesn’t have public metadata, but has a pointer to an endpoint that, provided authentication, will tell you some protected metadata, depending on who you authenticate as.
This could be something to keep your eye on. Because knowing Google this could go full blown to the masses.

The Google Android question?

// August 6th, 2009 // No Comments » // Google Android Phones

android-renderedOne of the questions that’s on the minds of Android users everywhere. Is which device to choose? well that all depends on what you want to do with the device. The top devices running android right now would be the T-mobile Google Android G1, HTC  Hero, and T-Mobile Google Android My Touch 3g. Well for beginners if want a device that does a lot then one of the mentioned devices above will suit you very well. And if you want to go all out then you can go with T-mobile Google Android G1. Due to the ability to achieve root access on the device. And perform things like apps 2 SD and run Linux type commands and a sleuth of cool apps. but like i always said its really up to end user on what they want the device to do. So look out Apple. Google is around the corner ready to race and take the lead. Being all that said Android is the wave of the future. So get on board and enjoy the ride.

Undecided on Google Android ?

Undecided on Google Android ?

So what’s the hype with Google Android? So you’re still stuck on your Windows Mobile phone or your iPhone and you want to make a switch but you’re still not really sure? I remember the first time I touched an HTC Google Android G1 it just didn’t pay the phone any justice. This Google Android powered phone is a personal device and all-google-android-mini-2each person customizes the Android phone to them. So unless the phone is yours, you just won’t feel the full effect of this fairly new operating system for your mobile device.
Not to worry. There is a way for you to test run the Android operating system before you decide if you want to make the switch. Like a lot of Linux distribution, Google Android has a live version of the OS. If you’re not familiar with what a live version is I will explain. A lot of Linux distribution has the option of running an OS direct from a CD/DVD. Same goes for android.
Although Android is a mobile OS, it has a live CD version that you can run direct from your desktop or laptop. Cool huh? You can even run it from your virtual machine and give it the test ride it deserves. Although not a useful OS for a computer, the live PC version of this OS is a great way for you to play with the OS without having to dish out the cash just to see if you would like it or not. And for the tech geeks, do it just because you can. The very same reason why we run Linux Debian on our G1s. Because we can.
Here is the link for the live Android distribution. Enjoy and screen shot your giant G1.

To netbook or not to netbook

How insane! It was just yesterday that I was carrying around my laptop size portable email machine that had to hook to dial up to get my email. I don’t even remember what it was called but the darn thing was huge for the one thing that it did. But back then, I was using a Motorola Star Tac and this email thing…whatever it was. You couldn’ t get anymore high tech than I was.
So I just purchased myself a netbook. I bought an Acer Aspire One with a 10.1” screen and a real hard drive loaded with Win XP. At first, I had my doubts. Can this little portable thing really do anything? I mean, who runs anything below 2 ghz anymore?
So the Aspire One runs on a 1.6 ghz Intel Atom with 1 gb of ram. When I first got this thing, I thought to myself, “I travel a lot, let’s get this thing”! But I had my doubts. Anything loaded with a full OS should be able to perform everything that it was designed for.
My first week goes around with this thing. I hated it! It was slow. It lagged a lot! And the thing was just a piece of junk. I thought to myself that I just wasted my money. OMG what did I just do? I couldn’t do anything with this little thing. It came preloaded with Microsoft Office but it lagged so much that it wasn’t even worth it. I hated myself for once for making such a horrible consumer decision.
So I decided to go real laptop shopping. When I arrived in Atlanta, I went to a Micro Center to search for laptops. I explained to the, surprisingly knowledgeable sales guy, my situation. I hated my netbook and I want a notebook.
The sales guy explained to me that all netbooks are like that because of the preloaded Mcafee anti-virus. Duh! It takes up all the resources of the netbook. It only has 1 gb of ram! So my ignorance was my downfall. I forgot what it is like to run a system with only 1 gb of ram. The guy at Micro Center didn’t even want to sell me on a new laptop. He just told me to remove the anti-virus software and install ESET (my favorite anyways).
ESET is a very effective anti-virus that does not take up a lot of resources.
So I took his advice and removed the Mcafee and installed the ESET. The Aspire One is like a rocket. This little netbook of mine is now on fire! I guess I’m getting old and not thinking about all the trouble shooting options and falling behind on my technology. I don’t know, But for $300, this thing is all worth it and more for the student, net surfer, or the traveler. I tether with my G1 and I can go anywhere and get great connection to the internet and work on my doctorates in psychology.
Don’t get me wrong. Don’t play Call of Duty on this thing. Aside from gaming, this little thing is fully capable of completing any task that you throw at it. I will be upgrading the ram and I can say with complete confidence that I made a great purchase. If you are on a budget or need a light traveler, a netbook is a great way to go.
I can even install Mac OSX on this thing!

Generation-G

Now that Generation X has come and gone, it is now time for generation G. Yes, you guessed it. I am talking about Generation Google.

Have you noticed the advancement that Google has made over the years? From simplicity in a powerful and revolutionary search engine, to Gmail, Street Views,  to yet another simple but genius idea….Google Voice. I have found myself using a lot of Google lately and can’t help but to think about how reliant my life has become of it.

I carry my G1 around of course as my phone but it also allowed me to fire my personal assistant. Just kidding, I did not have one but if I did, she would have been fired because the G1 runs my life for me. But the Android powered phone has given me freedom that I have never had before. I can run live time Twitter and manage all of my bank accounts at the same time detecting metal with my silly application.

On my netbook and my desktop computer, Google Talk and Google Desktop runs 24/7 so I can stay connected with friends and have searching power at the tip of my fingers and the applications move fast and takes up little resources. With Google Talk, I can skip using a mail client and streamline my netbook so that it moves quicker because those who have one know that we can hardly do anything if we run too many applications. Google has even teamed with some Laptop manufacturers powered by Ubuntu to create a user friendly and powerful socializing tool that is affordable for all. There are even talks of an Android powered personal computer in the near future.

Google Maps has been a life saver when I am looking for places to go. I simply put in the address and it has yet to fail to give me a street view of the area. Google Maps is great for seeing what you are getting into before you get there. It is great when you are looking for a place to live. Just plug in the address and bam, you can see your neighbor’s house and decide if you want to live next door to an escort service or not.

And how can I end this without talking about Google Voice? This is so simple yet so useful. Sign up now so you can get that invite. You can use the Google Voice number and never have to worry about porting a cell phone number again. Google assigns you a number and it forwards all calls to your chosen device(s). This is also great for small business owners. It opens the ability for starting businesses to have a phone number other than their personal phone but is received by their personal number. There are numerous usages for Google Voice depending on what your needs are and to be able to obtain a phone number separate from your own for free is unbeatable. Go Google!

I have never been so consolidated in my personal productivity and it is all thanks to Google’s advancement. Now why didn’t I buy that stock?

The Dawn of A New Era Google Android

// August 2nd, 2009 // 4 Comments » // Google Android Phones

all-google-android-mini-2So as our lives move from newspapers, magazines, and televisions to cell phones, social networking, and YouTube, we are now going through one of the most revolutionary renaissance of technology that will help us connect with the world and make friends in means never imagined with people we may never meet.
As open source technology is becoming more popular with both fans and manufacturers, we are seeing a new era of software and hardware technology that helps us connect in the simplest and most cost effective ways. We as people are now able to express ourselves in ways never before possible like creating useless applications for our phones to sharing video dairies with strangers of the world. But we all eventually become household names and the world sees us as another family member. Even if you only had 10 views, that is 10 more people that know you now that did not know you before.
Look at your phone’s applications if you are using a full capabilities phone. Most of those programs that you have downloaded were probably made in someone’s bedroom while they were bored but became popular enough to make it to your device. Just today, I discovered a useless application that gives me ideas of pick up lines to use on women. Within it, the application allowed users to add lines and then had their peers vote on them to give it a like-ability factor. I remember that back in the 90’s, the best we came to voting for peers was to call a 1-900 phone number. Of course, how many people really remember those or even know about them these days?
And who can help but to mention the idea that our dear Google may be competing against the biggest names of personal computer operating systems. We have seen the greatness of the HTC G1 powered by Google and now we anticipate the open source and low cost of Google personal computer technology. Although it has a short but long way to go, a Google powered world will mean easy access to world socialization for everyone.
